Information

I am Michael Aivaliotis, a teacher in a Greek school and a manager of the project called “Metikos Project of Stand by me Lesvos”.

Metikos Project is a new education and job training project of “Stand by me Lesvos”.

We strongly believe that what the residents in Kara Tepe refugee camp need more than anything is to stand up on their own feet and start working as well as earning money for themselves and their families’ needs.

Donors from all over Europe have supported us for a lot of years and we are confident that they will keep doing so with our new project “Metikos” of SBML.

As it is referred in Wikipedia: “ In ancient Greece, a metic (Ancient Greek: μέτοικος, métoikos: from μετά, metá, indicating change, and οἶκος, oîkos “dwelling”) was a foreign resident of Athens who did not have citizen rights in their Greek city-state (polis) of residence.”

Stand By Me Lesvos

We support self organized teams of refugees at Kara Tepe camp such as Moria Corona Awareness Team MCAT, Afghan team and White Helmets Arab team. Together we can make the difference with materials, tools and volunteers.
Metikos is based on volunteers. We don’t have other employees, but only refugees and we’ll try to find more jobs for them.

Our projects include: Education, Job training, Women workshop and Ariadne Erasmus refugee programs.

We acknowledge that Lesvos has faced several challenges, whereas the year 2020 has been particularly tough for the island. Everything from the violent conflicts we experienced at the early start of the year, to Moria Camp burning down, to a loss of tourism and economic decline forcing more and more Greek citizens under the poverty line.

For this, we stand together as Greek citizens, a handful of long-term international team-members and self-organised groups of asylum-seekers supporting one another to get through these difficult times.
