Stand By Me Lesvos

New plastic bottle recycling project and co-operation activities

Water Bottle Recycling

Another new project implemented with our partners Moria Corona Awareness Team and Moria White Helmets: recycling plastic bottles.

Now if you bring six empty bottles you get one new with cold water in exchange. Very few water for drinking is given to the refugees and now summer is coming.

We hope to solve three problems with this: to get rid of the huge amount of empty water bottles thrown away, to supply more drinking water and to save the environment.

The children liked to bring us so many bottles and members of MCAT team were busy all day with it.

Co-operation Municipalities Projects

On many places on the island volunteers distribute food and other supply to poor and needy people during this Corona Crisis. This is made possible in a co-operation project between Stand by me Lesvos and the Municipalities and thanks to generous support from the Greek community in Germany and Solidaritaet International.

Meanwhile, in cooperation with the School of Second Chance, we are using 3d printers to produce face shields for medical staff.

Evacuate Moria

We want to thank people who made demonstrations in Germany to support the demand of an evacuation from the camps on the islands.

Seems some calls for help were heard:

“As part of the government’s plans to ease pressure at overcrowded migrant reception centers on the eastern Aegean islands, some 1,500 residents of the notoriously cramped Moria camp on Lesvos are to be transferred to the mainland on Saturday.

The migrants will be the first out of a total of 2,380 members of vulnerable groups who are to be moved out of island camps over the next two weeks.

Gianluca Rocco, head of the International Organization for Migration’s Greek chapter, which is arranging for the migrants’ accommodation, told Kathimerini that reducing overcrowding on the islands “is more urgent than ever” amid the current pandemic.”
