A group of refugees from diverse countries have set up the Moria Coronavirus Awareness Team (MCAT), which aims to educate their respective communities about the virus and empower them to take control. “MCAT is an empowerment project. It has given refugees a platform to express themselves and exert a certain amount of control over their everyday lives,” said Shirin Tinnesand from Stand By Me Lesvos, a Greek NGO. “The impact has been immense and has enabled refugees to understand how much they are capable of.”
MCAT’s work includes setting up wash stations, creating multilingual posters to educate communities about the disease and distributing hygiene products. The group has also created its own mask factory.
